For those able to make it last night you already know, Chris Sharma is indeed a “rock star”!! His spell-binding presentation to a standing-room-only crowd at the Pour House Music Hall was special. The video and photos he shared were stunning. Most important, Sharma connected with everyone in the room. He inspired each of us to get outside and kindle our passion for adventure.

Vertical Ethiopia Review October 13, 2008

“There are starving children in Ethiopia!” Despite this well known fact I still could not finish off my childhood plate of brussel sprouts. “Name one of them!” was my usual knucklehead response. Well on September 30, Majka Burhardt in her presentation, Vertical Ethiopia, provided a breathtaking glimpse of that country’s stunning landscape and introduced a people of matching beauty. Majka’s experience as a climber takes the audience to magnificent heights yet it is her gift of storyteller that captures the essence of Ethiopia. Majka’s narrative combined with the superb photography of Gabe Rogel offer an intimate look at the intersection of culture, adventure, history and opportunity. We recommend Majka Burhardt and her new book with enthusiasm.

Climber Mark Synnott to visit Winston-Salem

The North FaceThe North Face Athlete Slide Show featuring Mark Synnott

The Garage, Winston-Salem – Fri, Oct 10 - 7pm

Athlete to Athlete Interview: Greg Child with Mark Synnott

athlete_photo_ms_01.jpg

Bio: After graduating from Middlebury College in 1993, Mark Synnott had no idea where he was going or what he would do for work. He just knew he wanted to climb. He ended up finding work as a carpenter, since it was conducive to a transient lifestyle. (“Build a house, climb a wall. Build a house, climb a mountain.”) Then, in 1996, Mark spent 39 days living on the side of the 4,700-foot north face of Polar Sun Spire, a rock tower rising from a frozen fjord in Canada’s Baffin Island. The ascent changed his life and started him on his quest to climb some of the biggest walls on the planet. He said goodbye to his carpenter job and never looked back. Many, many big-wall and alpine climbing adventures have transpired since, taking Mark to places like Patagonia, Pakistan, Nepal, India, China, Tibet, the Alaska Range, the Amazon, West Africa and Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific. In addition to his big wall exploits, Mark is also an accomplished free climber who especially enjoys long adventure trad climbs, such as the infamous “Stratosphere” in Colorado’s Black Canyon or the east face of Mt. Babel in the Canadian Rockies. He has onsighted 5.12 and redpointed 5.13. He’s climbed Yosemite’s El Capitan 20 times, and in 1997 he snagged the coveted second ascent of El Cap’s hardest line, the Reticent Wall (A5). Equally comfortable on ice and mixed as he is on rock, Mark has climbed high-end winter routes across the U.S., Canada, France and Norway.

As passionate about skiing and ski mountaineering as he is about climbing, Mark appeared in the 2001 Warren Miller film Cold Fusion, skiing off Mt. Waddington and Mt. Combatant in British Columbia. More recently, he snagged the first descent of a 5,100-foot couloir on Baffin Island’s highest peak, Mt. Odin.

When he’s not in the mountains, Mark works with The North Face research, design and development teams and lectures frequently on his life of adventure. He’s also a successful freelance photojournalist and a senior contributing editor at Climbing magazine. His articles and photos have appeared in many publications in the U.S. and abroad, including National Geographic Adventure, Men’s Journal, Outside, Skiing and New York magazine. Mark is the owner and operator of Synnott Mountain Guides (www.synnottmountainguides.com), a climbing school based in his hometown of Jackson, New Hampshire. Of all his adventures, Mark sees getting married and having a family as the greatest one yet. He lives at the end of a dead-end dirt road in the White Mountains with his wife, three children and two dogs.

Kick-off your fall adventures with Vertical Ethiopia @ Lincoln Theatre!

Vertical Ethiopia documents a climbing expedition to unexplored sandstone spires in northern Ethiopia. In March 2007, four women traveled to Ethiopia to discover if climbing might be the next frontier for this continuously evolving country. Told through a series of vignettes that reveal what it means to climb, to travel, and to explore, Vertical Ethiopia looks closely at the intersections between adventure and culture, history and opportunity.

8,000 Meter Challenge September 2, 2008

Filed under: Contributors, Events, Grassroots — Mike Massey @ 3:02 pm

by Matt Duerr, Adventure 16 Sales Associate

I drove up early afternoon on Wednesday to the Mt. Baldy lodge in the San Gabriel Mountains to get settled in for the 8000 Meter Challenge hosted by Jansport the next morning.  The goal was to summit the following three southern California peaks:  Mt. Baldy, San Gorgonio, and San Jacinto all in the same day.

Given the 5 am early start time (and not knowing what I was getting myself into) I figured it would be just another long day of trekking.  Well, fast-forward 12 hours and I may have said things that would be better left untold.  Were it not for the fact that our team needed to get back to San Diego that night we could have accomplished the entire challenge just after nightfall but instead we just completed two of the three peaks.

Mt. Baldy was quick (about 3.25 hours) and four miles less than the San Gorgonian round trip BUT Gorgonio completely kicked my butt!  Holy moly!  It took me just a bit longer than twice as long to complete the very scenic Gorgonio hike.  Upon summiting Baldy, I was greeted by some chippy winds, which totally made my morning since it was the first bit of cold I had experienced in So Cal for about 5 months (such a blistering summer!)  What a relief.  Onward to the San Gorgonian summit…despite the fact the mtn had demoralized me by the time of summit, the view was amazing.  Knowing that our team would probably not have enough time to summit San Jacinto and descend before the last gondola, it was nice enough just to look across the valley let it know I’d come back to visit another day.

Given that it was technically just a day hike, no technical gear was necessary.  The night prior to the hike was fairly warm so I was half in and half out of my Marmot pounder +25.  I laced my Rucky Chucky’s the next morning wondering if I should wear some boots for the first mountain…after a total of 26 miles I realized that the Rucky Chucky’s were the best way to go.  Great shoes, highly recommend them.  My water two water bottles and 3 liter Camelbak reservoir were stored in my Gregory advent pro day pack.  Worked out very well, as did the Nuun tablets I snuck into some of my Nalgenes.

It was a great hike despite being torn by San Gorgonio, but with a little more training I’ll be back to attempt it again on my own.

Mountains to Sea Trail Month set for October

fmst_logo1.jpgGuided hikes, trail building and raffle tickets for outdoor equipment will launch the first Mountains to Sea Trails Month in October co-sponsored by Friends of the Mountains to Sea Trail (FMST) and Great Outdoor Provision Co.

The Mountains to Sea Trail is a linear state park that will eventually stretch from the Great Smoky Mountains to the Outer Banks. Approximately half of the 1,000 mile length has been completed, most on federal and state lands.

“October is one of the best months to experience the trail,” said Kate Dixon, FMST executive director. “The temperature is cool for hiking or trail building and the fall colors will be terrific.”

Throughout the month FMST will offer guided hikes at some of the most scenic spots along the trail. There will also be trail construction days. Some of the handful of people who have hiked the entire trail will be making presentations across the state. The trail is roughly the equivalent of the distance from Raleigh to Boston.

Great Outdoor Provision Co.. a local outdoor retailer based in North Carolina, will conduct a raffle during the month with all proceeds going to help pay for additional construction of the trail. Great Outdoor Provision Co. will raffle prizes with a total value of more than $5000.

“The Mountains to Sea Trail is everything that’s good about the outdoors,” said Tom Valone, president . “It provides opportunities for families for a great selection of day hikes and the challenges and multi-day wilderness experience that backpackers are seeking. Our company is pleased to be part of this effort.”

More detailed information about Mountains to Sea Trail Month is be available on the FMST website of ncmst.org and greatoutdoorprovision.com/mst.

Our kick-off event will be Vertical Ethiopia with Majka Burhardt - Tuesday, September 30 @ Lincoln Theatre in Raleigh

Rock/Creek’s Inaugural 3 Stage Race a Success June 30, 2008

Filed under: Contributors, Events, Grassroots — bradmcallister @ 10:08 am
IMG_0727After three intense days and 60 miles of epic mountain trails, the bumps and bruises were all put behind and the joys and memories recounted. Cool temperatures and the occasional rain surprised runners from all over the country as they navigated a variety of trails that included some of the Southeast's roughest single-track. Overall it was a blessed weekend with few injuries and everyone left excited for next year's follow up event. Rock/Creek Race Team member and The Boonies board member Matt Sims held onto his 20 minute advantage going into the third stage to take home the overall victory with a 3 day combined time of 8:35:03. Fellow Rock/Creek Team member Jaclyn Greenhill was the first female overall winner with combined time of 9:10:01. Sal Coll finished as first place master's male finisher with a cumulative time of 9:10:42 for the three days. JoAnna Crooks was the female master's winner with a cumulative time of 12:28:12. Racers spanned generational boundaries and proved that anyone can complete long distance runs. 18-year old John Wiygul, a Chattanoogan resident, was the youngest finisher and second male overall for the three days in 9:05:23.. At 68 years-young, Randal Whorton, of Westminster, CO, was the oldest individual to complete all three stages. Chattanoogan.com has posted great recaps of each day. They can be found by following the links below: Stage 1: Lookout Mountain Stage 2: Raccoon Mountain Stage 3: Signal Mountain IMG_0711The 2008 Stage Race was the first official running of the event after a year of "underground" status proved it to be an event well worth repeating. It was also the first multistage trail race in the Southeast. The historic event could not have been possible without the support of its many sponsors. Rock/Creek would like to thank The Boonies, Greenlife, the Lula Lake Land Trust, Salomon, Hammer Nutrition, Mountain Hardwear, SmartWool, Covenant College and the numerous local volunteers who made the dream a possibility. Last weekend's stage race was the 3rd event in the 7 event Rock/Creek Trail Series. Information about the trail running race series can be found at www.rockcreek.com/trailseries.

Triangle Land Conservancy’s Green Jamboree is this SATURDAY, JUNE 21, 3 to 7 pm!!!

This year’s Green Jamboree celebrates 25 years TLC! How appropriate that Green Jamboree is being held at the Irvin Farm.

Logan Irvin was one of TLC’s founding board members in 1983 and a vocal proponent of the stewardship responsibilities of that new organization. When Logan died in 1984, TLC named the stewardship endowment in his honor: the Logan Irvin Fund. Before his death, Logan and his wife, Elinor, decided they would leave their 169-acre Orange County farm to TLC in their will. Elinor passed away in January 2007 after a long illness and TLC has been working steadily since to honor the memories of Logan and Elinor by bringing this once vibrant farm back to life.

Green Jamboree marks the first public opening of the Irvin Farm. Please come out and help us make it a special day.

Green Jamboree 2008 features:
